You just install
SuSe 9.3 and surprised when
amarok won't play your favorites .mp3 songs. And you think there was something wrong with your SuSe when your
Kaffeine showing an error when opening DVD. Well, you are right, there was “something” in your SuSe. I'm like you when install SuSe two months ago. And with “google” I found dozen information regarding multimedia problem in SuSe > 9.2, and there also dozen of thread and website link showed how to fix multimedia in SuSe.
Read paragraph below, a copy paste from wiki about mp3:
In the first half of 1995 through the late 1990s, MP3 files began flourishing on the Internet. MP3 popularity was mostly due to, and interchangeable with, the successes of companies and software packages like Nullsoft's Winamp (released in 1997), mpg123, and Napster (released in 1999). Those programs made it very easy for the average user to playback, create, share, and collect MP3s.Controversies regarding peer-to-peer file sharing of MP3 files have spread widely in recent years - largely because high compression enables sharing of files that would otherwise be too large and cumbersome to share. Due to the vastly increased spread of MP3s through the Internet some major record labels reacted by filing a lawsuit against Napster to protect their copyrights (see also intellectual property).SuSE Linux is one of the better desktop Linux distributions on the market today, providing a functional and aesthetically pleasing environment for the new Linux user as well as seasoned veterans. And they are apparently had some doubt as to legality (licensing and patent issues) of the mp3 format so unfortunately left out the codec to play back this file format. And also their version of xine may lack certain features because of legal requirements (potential patent violation). Check this out on their site for more detail:
http://www.suse.de/en/private/products/suse_linux/i386/multimedia.htmlSo, now you realize why SuSe doesn't put the codecs in their installation CDs. And now you look back to “google' and search for the tips, but most of them suggest to update SuSe with “YOU” and it's mean update all. But, if you like me, having slower connection through dial up modem and just want update only to have maximum multimedia support in your SuSE, then here we go:
1. Uninstall all multimedia application, libraries and codecsDoing this by Run Yast -> Software -> Install/Remove Software
I assume you love Kaffeine and Mplayer for Video/DVD, and Amarok/XMMS - for Audio, so in search box type “xine” and remove everything appears in the right coulomb except “xinetd”.
2. Install Multimedia Option PacksSuSe offer 4 package to fix multimedia support, but you won't needed all. And if you have problem with bandwidth cause of slow connection like me, just grab do selective installation.
On SuSE main menu, select YaST -> Software -> Online Update. (enter root password when asked). YaST will look for http://www.suse.de/cgi-bin/suseservers.cgi and give you mirror to the available and fastest server for download the packages.
Just follow the instruction on the YaST and tick:
- Do selective on Multimedia-Option-Pack-2 by select:
- Multimedia-Option-Pack-3, select:
- Multimedia-Option-Pack-4, select:
Click accept, and you're done with Option Packs. Now you can play your .mp3 file. Then we continue bring it back full multimedia support to our SuSE.
